Fool’s errand: Still

2025

A 20-year survey of selected works in the pursuit of stillness.

Still: to be still. Stillness. The Desert Fathers and Mothers of early Christianity sought God in solitude and austerity, creating a receptive silence where a deeper understanding could emerge. In this tradition a form of prayer, known as Apophatic prayer, was practiced. Apophatic prayer is a prayer of silence, without petition, without intervention, without declaration. It is a prayer of silent presence, of stillness.

“When liberated by stillness, life itself becomes a prayer, and the silence becomes full of prayer, rather than just a means to avoid distraction.” – Thomas Merton.
